Ulefone Power 5S: Unboxing
Ulefone Power 5S comes in a black box. The package looks unremarkable, because there are only labels with model number and a small sticker with specifications on the reverse side.
However, inside the box you will find many interesting and useful accessories. There is power adapter with charging 10W, SIM needle, user manual, USB Type-C cable, adapter from USB Type-C to 3.5mm audio jack, OTG adapter and even an adapter from an microUSB to USB Type-C.
In addition, the Chinese manufacturer added a spare protective film on the screen, so you should not worry about screen protection.
Ulefone Power 5S: Design
First of all, Ulefone Power 5S is not rugged smartphone, but it looks like this. It is so big because of large battery inside.
The back cover is plastic, textured under the skin. The upper and lower ends and corners are made of smooth plastic. In addition, the side faces and camera panel are colored metal. The large screws on the case make the design even more brutal.
The display has a diagonal of 6-inches with aspect ratio of 18:9. Ulefone Power 5S is not bezel-less, because there are thick black bezels around the screen.
Above the screen there is a place for sensors, front flash, LED indicator and two cameras. The conversational speaker is made higher than the rest of the elements and stylized under the wingspan.
The space under the display is decorated with a loudspeaker grille. There are no functional buttons.
The bottom edge is occupied by the main microphone, USB Type-C port and multimedia speaker. The top one is empty. There is no 3.5mm audio jack, so you have to use an adapter from Type-C.
On the left side there is a hybrid slot for two nano SIM, or nano SIM + microSD.
Right side has volume rocker, power button and camera button. It is strange, but camera button does not activate the camera application in sleep mode, only after unlocking the phone. The buttons are plastic with a rough texture and a long stroke.
The fingerprint scanner is located on the right side. It is unusual place for fingerprint reader, but because of large size and thick body, this is a good solution.
So, Ulefone Power 5S has a balanced design, while the body is not to heavy, being in the hand.
Ulefone Power 5S: Display
Ulefone Power 5S is equipped with FHD+ display, diagonal of 6-inches and aspect ratio of 18:9. The corners are rounded. There isn’t notch above the display.
The resolution is 2160×1080 pixels, and pixel density is 404 ppi. The glass brand is unknown, but the phone has protective film out of the box.
We have no questions to color reproduction and viewing angles of the screen. The backlight is uniform. Display does not go blind in the sun. The touch panel supports up to 10 simultaneous touches.
Ulefone Power 5S: Performance
The smartphone is powerful by MediaTek Helio P23 (MT6763) chipset. It is a logical continuation of a successful, but outdated MT6753. The chipset has 4 Cortex-A53 cores operated at frequencies up to 2 GHz. The graphics core is ARM Mali-G71 MP2 at 700 MHz, while the process technology is 16 nm.
Ulefone Power 5S comes in a single version with 4GB of RAM type LPDDR4x in dual channel mode at a frequency of 1500 MHz, and 64GB of storage eMMC 5.1. Additionally, you can insert microSD memory card up to 256 GB instead of the second SIM.
Helio P23 works very well in everyday tasks. It is fast and smooth. The cores of Cortex-A53 are still vigorous and do an excellent job with everyday tasks.
ARM Mali-G71 MP2 graphic core is not super powerful. The smartphone is absolutely not gaming. However, you can play the most Android games on medium graphics.
Ulefone Power 5S: Software
Ulefone Power 5S runs on the latest Android 8.1 Oreo. It looks like stock Android without any customization. We are pleased with the complete absence of third-party applications, only file manager, QR code scanner and Google apps.
However, there are outdated icons for some apps, for example, calculator, clock, music and others. Fortunately, Google Store offers modern icon packs.
The manufacturer paid a special attention to the functionality of the fingerprint scanner. You can assign actions to a touch and a long hold. Also, you can set a specific fingers to launch apps immediately after unlocking.
The company also introduced Face unlock function. It works good, but takes longer time than fingerprint reader.
Ulefone Power 5S: Camera
Ulefone Power 5S is equipped with dual main camera. The main sensor is Sony IMX230 with resolution of 21MP, aperture f/1.8 and optical stabilization. The second sensor is 5 megapixel. We think it is a fake, because the smartphone doesn’t even have portrait mode.
The camera is able to make pretty good photos in daytime. They have excellent detail, sharp and clear. You can even see the text and other small elements. The autofocus is fast and accurate.
Ulefone Power 5S comes with advanced OIS optical image stabilization technology to eliminate unwanted noise when clicking or shooting video.
There are also two sensor on the front. The main sensor is 8MP with interpolation to 13 megapixels and aperture of f/2.2, while the second sensor is 5MP. The camera is not ashamed to use for selfie in social networks or for video calls. A small LED is available for night shooting.
Ulefone Power 5S: Battery
Battery is the highlight of Ulefone Power 5S. It has a capacity of 13000 mAh, which is 3-4 times more than other devices. The smartphone has become the champion of our battery test – 35 hours of continuous work in the browser and watching videos online.
In practice, you can expect 3-4 days with always-on mobile Internet or Wi-Fi. 13000mAh battery is superior to many portable batteries, so you can charge other smartphone via OTG adapter.
For charging Ulefone Power 5S, a 5V/5A adapter is included in the package. It is fast charging 25W. The battery charge up to 50% takes about 2 hours, and it will take another 3 hours to 100%. So, in total you have to wait 5 hours. Of course, this is not very fast, but it is 13000mAh battery!
A nice bonus is wireless charging Qi support. You can place the charging dock in a convenient place and forget about charging cables.
Ulefone Power 5S: Conclusion
Ulefone Power 5S will not leave anyone indifferent. The smartphone is powered by an excellent processor with good performance, while the battery capacity makes you genuinely surprised.
The battery is really huge, so the smartphone size is quite large. You can confuse it with a rugged smartphone due to its dimensions.
Ulefone Power 5S is already available for pre-order in official store at price of $209.99. It is very good price for big battery smartphone!
