Mediatek Dimensity 800: Powerful Chipset For Mid-Range Smartphones in 2020
In a few years of Qualcomm monopoly we have got used to the fact that Exynos, Kirin and Mediatek are something that is not very good for smartphones. If the budget and some mid-range phones still use processors from MediaTek, then flagship phones are powered by only Qualcomm chipsets.
You know even Samsung users prefer to buy smartphones based on Snapdragon than on branded Exynos.
In early 2020, the situation on mobile processor market has not changed much. Although there are some movements.
At the end of 2019, Mediatek decided to return to the game with new developments. The first chipset was flagship Dimensity 1000 with built-in 5G modem. A week before 2020, the manufacturer presented another processor for mid-range phones – Mediatek Dimensity 800.
Is it good processor for smartphone in 2020? Can it compete with Qualcomm chipsets? Let’s find out.
Will Mediatek Dimensity 800 Flip The Market?
The leadership of Qualcomm is undeniable for two simple reasons: the processors are made qualitatively, and they can also be used by almost everyone.
As for Exynos and Kirin, the situation is the opposite: processors are not quite balanced, especially people are not satisfied with their graphics capabilities. Also these chipsets are used only in their own smartphones – they are not sold to other phone manufacturers. Previously, only a small part of Exynos processors were used in Meizu smartphones.
However, 2020 Kirin plans to move away from Huawei and start providing their processors to other phone manufacturers.
At the same time, Mediatek is on its way to Qualcomm. It is the only manufacturer of processors for mass consumption. Despite the company’s activity in the past, initiative and new technologies, gross mistakes brought all efforts to nothing. As a result, the incomplete governor, high heat and high power consumption of processors have driven the company into a dead end.
Fortunately, for a while the brand has gathered strength and already in 2019 really pleasantly surprised. The first decent processor was Helio G90T. It is used in Redmi Note 8 Pro.
Its performance is comparable to Snapdragon 730G, although there are disadvantages in terms of greater power consumption and heating.
Then there was Dimensity 1000, which is competitor to Snapdragon 855, and now Dimensity 800 is ready for mid-range phones.
MediaTek Dimensity 800 completes with Snapdragon 765 and 765G processors beforehand. If these processors have similar performance, it will seriously hit Qualcomm in the foreseeable future.
Main Features of Mediatek Dimensity 800
The detailed specifications of new chipset have not yet been provided by MediaTek. On the manufacturer’s official website, there are only specifications of Dimensity 1000. However, at the CES 2020, Mediatek shared some specifications of Dimensity 800 processor, so we have some thoughts about new chipset.
So, the main goal of MediaTek Dimensity 800 is mid-range smartphones. The processor has built-in 5G modem Helio M70. The modem works in SA and NSA modes. Also, it supports Two Carrier Aggregation (2 CC CA) technology.
MediaTek Dimensity 800 processor has eight cores. They are divided into two clusters: 4 high-performance Cortex-A76 cores with up to 2 GHz + 4 energy efficient Cortex-A55 cores with up to 2 GHz.
The graphics is represented by Mali-G77 MC9. There is also HyperEngine turbo bust technology. It increases the graphics performance in games.
Among other features, Dimensity 800 5G received a quad-core unit. It is required for operations related to using AI APU 3.0 (AI Processing Unit). Dimensity 800 also received support for cameras with up to 64 MP resolution or dual camera with 32 MP + 16 MP resolution. The maximum resolution of supported displays is Full HD+ with a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz.
When Mediatek Dimensity 800 Will Be Released?
Production of Dimensity 800 will start in the first quarter of 2020.
List of Smartphones on Mediatek Dimensity 800
The first smartphones based on Dimensity 800 chipset will be presented in the second quarter of 2020. As for the first smartphones, they could be Redmi 9 and Redmi Note 9, but this information has not yet been confirmed.
